State Representative Charles Ortega and State Senator Mike Schulz addressed a healthy crowd at the first Legislative Luncheon of 2009 hosted by the Altus Chamber of Commerce in the Student Center at Western Oklahoma State College on Friday afternoon.

The Chamber of Commerce will sponsor 3 more luncheons in conjunction with the Altus Kiwanis Club this year.

Rep. Ortega explained how he is adjusting to his newly elected position on Capitol Hill and said that he’s “ready to get the newness over with...”

He went on to tell the crowd that the members of the House representing Oklahoma, all from different areas and walks of life, are doing their best to work together for the good of their constituents.

“The general consensus of the guys that I’ve met so far is that they wanna do what’s best for the state. They wanna do what’s best for the people,” he said.

Ortega went on to say that he is amazed and overwhelmed at the “theatrics and drama” that are involved when bills are discussed on the floor; nevertheless, he says it is interesting to see how the process works.

Rep. Ortega also said that once the period is over for discussing House Bills, the state Reps will break down into committees to hear the Senate Bills.

“I can’t wait to see which direction those ideas are headed...” he said.

Sen. Schulz followed up Ortega’s speech with updates about the recent passing of his bill, SB 452, and said that Oklahoma will not only get its share of the economic stimulus transportation dollars, it will also get some transportation dollars from other states in that our state is shovel ready to complete various stimulus projects.

Sen. Schulz also touched on the impact of wind energy, explaining that in order for the energy alternative to be effective in our area, we would need huge transmission lines built and there is a group working on making this a priority for the state.

On a much lighter note, Senator Schulz revealed that he gets to carry the legislation that will name the state’s rock’n’roll song.

He said that although the song has been selected, he does not know that name of the song; however, the group that performs the song will be in Oklahoma on Monday, at which time the name of the song will be revealed.
