NORMAN – Cold shooting and too many turnovers proved to be the downfall of the Altus High Lady Bulldogs in their Class 5A Area Championship game Thursday night against the Midwest City Carl Albert Lady Titans.

Carl Albert (23-3), the second ranked team in the state, came away with 39-25 victory over the Lady Bulldogs to earn at state tournament berth.

Altus still has an opportunity to make to the state tournament. They now move to the loser’s bracket final where they will meet Durant, who was a 32-30 winner over El Reno in Thursday night’s loser’s bracket game. Altus will meet the Lady Lions at 3 p.m. Saturday at Norman High School.

Against Carl Albert, the Lady Bulldogs had their chances. But they could not hit shots and when the game was close in the third quarter, they committed too many turnovers.

Altus scored only three points in the first quarter and trailed 12-3 at the end of the first eight minutes

But the Lady Bulldogs rallied in the second period and when Kiondra Harris hit a shot at the halftime buzzer, Altus trailed only 19-16.

The Lady Bulldogs scored the first four points of the third quarter on shots by Janelle Durrough and Taren Ray.

Ray’s basket gave the Lady Bulldogs their only lead of the night at 20-19 with 5:30 remaining in the third period.

However, the turnover bug hit Altus and the Lady Bulldogs did not score for the next five minutes and they scored only five points in the final 13:30 of the game. Altus tallied only nine points in the second half.

The Lady Bulldogs did not have a player in double figures. Harris led the way with eight points. Ray had seven points. Durrough scored six points while Meagan Steen and Michelle Marcha had two points each.
