Jackson County Election Board Secretary Jennifer Wilson said Tuesday that her office has had an overwhelming amount of calls and inquiries about early voting. She also said that there even seems to much more interest in this election than the one four years ago.
“We have been getting 10 to 12 calls or more an hour, every day, about absentee ballots,” said Wilson. “And we have already received about four times the amount of absentee ballots requests than in years past.”
Less than a week remains for registered voters in Jackson County to apply for absentee ballots to be mailed to them for the Nov. 6 General and Eldorado Special Elections.
“We’ve had so many requests so far for absentee ballots to be mailed that we ran out of stamps,” Wilson added.
Applications for absentee ballots must be in the hands of the County Election Board no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31 , to be processed.
Any registered voter eligible to vote in the election may vote by absentee ballot without stating a reason, Wilson said. Absentee voters may apply in person at the County Election Board Office or they may send their applications by mail or fax.
Voters also may apply for absentee ballots for the following reasons:
—Registered voters who are physically incapacitated and voters who care for physically incapacitated persons who cannot be left unattended may apply for absentee ballots only be mail or by fax.
—Registered voters who are confined to nursing homes in the county may apply only by mail or by fax.
—Military personnel, residents of Jackson County living overseas and the spouses and dependents of each group are entitled to vote without being registered. They may apply only by mail or by fax.
Voters will be able to vote absentee in-person on the following days and times:
Absentee In-Person voting days will be Friday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 3 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Monday, Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Voting will be at the County Election Board, in the lobby of the Jackson County Courthouse.
Wilson said, “If these dates are not convenient for you, you may apply for an absentee ballot by mail at the County Election Board.” The deadline to do this is Wednesday, Oct. 31.
