She is survived by her brother, Shearl D. Barton and wife Wilena of Chouteau; three children, Donald Joe Reece of Elk City, Barton Wayne Reece of Elk City, and Mary Ella Freeman and husband Austin Freeman of Houston, Texas. She was affectionately known as Mamajo to her five grandchildren, Shara LaCross and husband Charles of Pewaukee, Wisc., Lisa Reece of Elk City, Jenny Reece of Oklahoma City, Keith Freeman of Dallas, Texas, and Kara Freeman Gray and husband Christopher of Stillwater. Joan had one great-grandchild, Gina Williams and husband Dan of Pewaukee, and one great-great-grandchild, Arlen Benjamin Williams, and several nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Patsy Darby; her daughter-in-law, Susan Reece; and her daughter-in-law, Arlene Reece.
Joan was a member of the Hudson and Elm Church of Christ for many years. She began working at a young age, selling popcorn at the Plaza, Delta, and Ritz movie theaters in Altus. After working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for a decade, she lived in the Bakersfield, Calif. area for eight years working as a custom drapery seamstress for Sears & Roebuck. After returning to Altus, she worked at the Altus Medical and Surgical Clinic from 1970-1975, then finished out her career as a switchboard operator for the Altus Air Force Base, retiring in 1994 after 18 ½ years.
While she resided in Altus, she lived at 420 S. Navajoe, the family home since 1934. Joan had many interests, especially books, reading, and family history. She deeply loved her family and was very proud of them. She will be greatly missed. Joan requested no funeral service be held.
