The 35th annual Farm City Week Banquet was held Thursday evening with the theme “Farming, Flying and Community, the Pillars of Southwest Oklahoma.” Maurice King was the Master of Ceremonies for the event. He explained to the group that the purpose of Farm City Week is to recognize the importance of agriculture to the economic base of southwest Oklahoma.
He went on to say that the Altus Chamber of Commerce sponsors this week in order to recognize the contributions made by farming and ranching to the overall economy of Jackson County.
Several activities were held this week to help promote a better understanding of the interdependence between the rural and urban communities.
The kickoff of Farm City week this year included a Farmer’s Appreciation Luncheon and farm tours to Robbins Farming Operation, Cotton Growers Gin, Altus Peanut Warehouse Company, Gavilon, and a special Lugert/Altus Irrigation District Demonstration Project. Tractors for the tour were provided by Livingston Machinery and Western Equipment.
About 60 people were also taken on orientation air refueling flight Thursday, hosted by Col. Krawietz.
During the banquet, Eddie and Joan Wilcoxen, representing KWHW Radio, presented the “Legends of Agriculture” award to Rodney Nichols. Col. Anthony Krawietz, Commander of the 97th Air Mobility Wing at Altus Air Force Base, also presented a Wing lithograph to Nichols.
Trudy Cavillo, of KEYB Radio, presented the Jackson County Conservation District Speech winners with cash awards. The two winners, Jake Hall and Katelynn Shumaker, also read their winning speeches at the banquet.
