Fifty cents here or a dollar there might not seem like a lot, but at The Market Place, located 506 S. Main, it really does add up. Since the beginning of this year, owner Jennepher Lobaj has been selling suckers at the checkout counter to customers as they make their purchases. “As soon as people see where the profits are going to, they are more than happy to buy a sucker, most say just keep the change!” The money Lobaj collects goes directly to the Altus Fire/Rescue Department’s Coats for Kids Program. Now in its 14th year, Coats for Kids works with the Salvation Army to provide new coats to qualifying Jackson County families to be opened Christmas morning. Venders from the Market Place also made donations to Lobaj’s efforts. Over the year, $342.67 was collected and donated to Coats for Kids. Altus Fire Chief Jerry Abbott says “The patronage from our local businesses and community is what keeps this program running. The contributions made go directly to keeping our community’s children warm for this winter.
