Altus Police responded to a sexual assault call in the 300 Block East Walnut at approx. 11:05 a.m. yesterday morning.

According to Police Chief Tim Murphy, the suspect was the stepfather to the 24-year-old victim. The victim told investigators that while she was asleep in her bed, she felt someone lay on top of her. She awoke and discovered her stepfather, Jorge Tapia, attempting to remove her clothes. She screamed for help, as she was being overpowered by her stepfather.

Murphy said that unknown to Tapia, the victims 13-year-old brother was in the home. A physical altercation began between the victim’s brother and Tapia. The suspect made threats to teen before leaving the residence.

Tapia had been living in Mexico and had only been in Altus for a few weeks. Investigators have submitted a warrant request to the Jackson County District Attorneys office for the arrest of 47-year-old Tapia on charges of Attempted First Degree Rape.
