After her graduation from Lawton High School, the family moved to Altus. She continued her education by attending Altus Junior College and Southwestern State College, graduating with a degree in Speech from Oklahoma A&M University. As a student at A&M she pledged Pi Beta Phi Sorority in which she was very active all of her life. She later obtained her Masters of Education Degree from Southwestern State University.
When World War II began she returned to Altus where she met the love of her life, Mitch Windle, marrying him in 1944. They raised two daughters, Mary Michele and Melanie. The family actively participated in their church, First Presbyterian, and the Altus community. Nan’s faith was demonstrated by “acts of faith,” and she was a Sunday School teacher and church Elder for many years.
Nan and Mitch’s friends were very important to them and they cultivated many lifelong friendships. The neighborhood “Atomic Seven” bowling team’s social events were highlights for adults and children alike. Pranks were the norm.
After Mitch’s death in 1964, it was Nan’s honor to present the Mitch Windle Memorial Trophy every year to a deserving A.H.S. athlete.
Nan was a born educator and taught at Eugene Field, Roosevelt Elementary Schools and Altus Junior College. Her family, which includes five educators, inherited her passion for learning. She had an “incurable” love of books. She was a founding member of the Aldonion Club, active in P.E.O. and enjoyed giving book reviews for the library and programs for the community. After her retirement she caught the traveling bug and created happy memories with her friends, “the girls.”
Her family remained a close circle and many happy times included the families of her sister and brother, with whom she shared special relationships. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. “Grannie Nannie” timed her visits to Colorado where her children lived to attend, sporting events, piano recitals, graduations and weddings.
To be near her family, she moved to Littleton, Col., and spent the last five years enjoying family, new friendships and experiences.
Her sparkling blue eyes, intelligent and compassionate manner, sense of humor and joie de vivre will be missed by all.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Michele Beaty, daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Don Jones; grandchildren, Shaun and Eleni Beaty, Scott and Kirsten Jones, Kelly and Eric Kaye, and Cindy and Greg Chicota; great-grandchildren, Austin Beaty, Ashley Beaty, Landen Jones, Anson Jones, Korbin Jones, and Kodie Kaye; and several adored nieces and nephews.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Nan’s memory to the Bob Beaty Foundation, Inc., c/o Mary Michele Beaty, 5403 Coyote Canyon, Unit A, Morrison, Colo. 80465, or the First Presbyterian Church in Altus (address below.)
Memorial Services for Nan Windle will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 208 E. Cypress, in Altus.
After the Memorial Service, the family would love to visit with friends in the Fellowship Hall at the Presbyterian Church.
