Oklahoma City Centennial, Lawton Eisenhower, Lawton MacArthur and Houston HCYA were first round winners Thursday in the 41st annual Clester Harrington Shortgrass Basketball Tournament played at Cletus B. Street Fieldhouse.
Centennial 63, Altus 59
It went down to the wire, but in the end the Altus High Bulldogs couldn’t come up with the big play when they needed.
The Bulldogs battled back from nine point deficit in the fourth quarter.
Devin Wilkerson hit a three-point shot with 3:31 to give Altus a 54-52 lead with 3:31 remaining in the game. Kasen Warren made a follow shot 30 seconds later and the Bulldogs led 56-52 and appeared headed to victory.
But the Bison wasn’t finished. Cornelious McKiver sank a shot from beyond the arc to tie it at 59-59 with 56 seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs had two more chances to take the lead. Wilkerson missed on a three point attempt and on its next possession Altus turned the ball over with 41 seconds left.
Centennial worked the clock down and Terry Davis worked himself free under the basket. His shot rimmed off but goal tending was called and the Bison led 61-59 with 15 seconds left.
AHS coach Rick Bull called two consecutive time outs to plot strategy. Centennial applied full-court pressure and Altus’ Landon Ybarra rushed the ball up the court. He drove into the lane and put up a shot that was deflected by 6-7 junior Austin Garner. Garner was fouled on the play and responded by swishing a pair of free throws with six seconds left to give Centennial a 63-59 lead.
Warren led Altus in scoring with 20 points. Wilkerson finished with 17 points which included four three-point baskets.
Centennial had 10 players that broke into the scoring column. Terry Davis led the way with 15 points.
Centennial will play Houston HCYA in a semifinal tonight at 8 p.m.
