It was a good weekend of baseball for the Western Oklahoma State College Pioneers. The second ranked Pioneers swept a four game series from Luna, N.M.

On Monday they took a long trip to Bartlesville and swept a doubleheader from Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Western 5, Luna 1

It was a masterful performance by Edward Cruz. The 6-1, 170 pound sophomore from the Bronx, N.Y., threw five innings of no-hit baseball. He struck out six on his way to the victory.

Western plated all five runs in the third inning, taking advantage three hit batters and one walk. Fraylin Paez brought in two runs with a single. Willie Allen also had run scoring single in the inning.

Western 9, Luna 4

Willie Allen and Jessue Alvarado homered while Felix Frias was the winning pitcher.

Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers pounded Luna pitching as six hitters combined for nine hits, nine RBIs and nine runs scored.

Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring two runs in the first inning when it scored on Allen’s two-run home run.

Two Western base runners came all the way around to score in each of the second, fifth and sixth. In the second, Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers scored on a two-run home run by Alvardo.

Paez, Randy Rodriguez and Jose Fortuna each had two hits in the game.

Western 11, Luna 4

Rodriguez it for the cycle to spark the Pioneers to the win. to an 11-4.

Rodriguez had what is sure to be one of the most memorable days in his career. Rodriguez went 4-4 in the game. He doubled in the first inning, singled in the second inning, tripled in the fourth inning, and homered in the fifth inning.

Western blew out Luna thanks to 14 hits, including six extra base hits. The Pioneers scored three runs in the third on a solo home run by Rafeal Peña, a solo home run by Willie Allen, and an error.

The Pioneers hit four home runs in the win. Additional home runs came when Randy Rodriguez homered in the fifth inning and Allen homered in the third and sixth inning.

Western 8, Luna 6

Rafeal Pena homered while Aneuris Rodriguez was the winning pitcher.

Rodriguez struck out four, walked one and gave up seven hits and one earned run.

Western loser Victor Mendez put away the final three outs to record the save.

Pioneer notes: Former Western pitcher Jemaine Cotton was at the games this weekend. Cotton is a pitcher in the Houston Astros organization. He is schedule to report to the minor league camp on March 2.

Western 6, Oklahoma Wesleyan 3

Four first-inning runs helped Western to a 6-3 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan at Bartesville on Monday.

Jessue Alvardo paced Pioneers at the plate. Alvardo went 2-3, drove in one and scored one run. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the third inning.

Alex Polanco got it done on the bump on the way to a win. He allowed two runs over four innings. He struck out seven, walked six and surrendered no hits.

Western’s Kevin Torres put away the final six outs to record the save.

Western 11, Oklahoma Wesleyan 8

Down four runs in the sixth, Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers recovered thanks to Casey Coyle’s single in the seventh, and pulled out a 11-8 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan on Monday at Bartlesville .

With the score tied at seven, Coyle came to the plate and singled, bringing home Rafeal Peña. It capped off an 8-run inning.

Ceazar Figuereo led Western Oklahoma St. Pioneers’ offensive threat, as he got on base four times in the game. He scored two runs and had one RBI. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the seventh inning.

Figuereo was two for three, Sherman Lacrus two for four and Aneuris Rodriguez three for five.

Jared Cook got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed one run over one inning. Cook struck out none, walked one and gave up one hit.

Western (8-0), will host Coffeyville, Kan. this weekend. A 1 p.m. game is schedule both Friday and Saturday. A single game is on tap for noon Sunday.
