James L. Roy Allen, 90, of Wichita Falls, Texas, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Conrad, officiating. Interment will be held at 4 p.m. at Walters Cemetery in Walters, under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.
Mr. Allen was born April 12, 1922 near Walters to Albert and Joanna Allen. He married Noreen Jones on Valentines Day 1965 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She preceded him in death in 2004. Mr. Allen came to Midwestern in 1967 as public information director and journalism instructor. Two years later he became the universitys first full-time journalism professor. He was faculty adviser to The Wichitan, the university student newspaper, for 18 years. He retired in 1986, but continued to teach part-time until 1992.
Mr. Allen was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served with the Army Coast Artillery Corps in Okinawa during World War II and with the Field Artillery in Korea during the Korean War.
Mr. Allen was a graduate of Altus High School in 1941. He received his bachelors degree in journalism at the University of Oklahoma and his masters degree in journalism at the University of Iowa. He was a life member of the University of Oklahoma Alumni Association.
Mr. Allen worked as a newspaper reporter and editor for 15 years in Oklahoma and Texas before coming to Midwestern. He was a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. He was also a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he taught a Sunday School class for several years.
He is survived by three nieces, Jeanelle Rock of West Fork, Ark., Loretta Atchley of Chickasha, and Rosalie Griffin of Aurora, Colo.; and two nephews, Martin Burton of Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Rev. David Conrad of Minco.
Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 1526 Weeks St., Wichita Falls, TX 76302; or to the Roy and Noreen Allen Media Club Award at Midwestern State University.
