Lady Pioneers sweep Frank Phillips

Altus, OK- Western Oklahoma State (14-4, 2-2) finished a four game series sweep over Frank Phillips College on Monday in Altus. The Pioneers took game one 12-4 in five innings followed by a 9-0 game two victory in five innings.

The Western hitters got started early with Emery Fox leading the bottom half of the first off with a double to right-center field. Maggie McBrayer followed with a sharp single to left field. Bailey Spencer drove the first runs in of the game with a two rbi single to center field. Kaderka followed with a line drive to left field to put runners on first and second. Katy Fletcher drove in the next run with a rbi single to center field to extend the lead to three. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Emily Jones made the score 4-0. Two batters later Kelsey Watson added a rbi single. Ashley Rutledge worked a walk to put two on with one out for leadoff hitter Emery Fox. Fox drove a 1-1 pitch over the scoreboard in left field to give Western their final runs of the inning and make the score 8-0.

Western picked up two more runs when Malori Moss connected for her fourth home run of the season, a towering two run shot to left-center field in the second inning.

Bailee Kaderka got the win for Western working two innings allowing three hits and one run. The Pioneers got two hits apiece from Emery Fox, Maggie McBrayer, Bailee Kaderka, and Kelsey Watson. Fox and Bailey Spencer both drove in three runs in the contest.

Game two starter for the Pioneers was Kaderka once again. Kaderka made quick work of Frank Phillips in the first retiring the side in order. Western got a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning starting with a Fox walk. Fox then stole second and third base to set up McBrayer with nobody out. McBrayer delivered with a line drive single to center field to put Western up 1-0. Two batters later Fletcher drove a full count pitch off the center field wall for an rbi double. That would be all the damage for the inning as the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead to the second.

Western got two more runs in the bottom of the inning off Fox’s second of three home runs for the day. This one a two run shot to center field.

With a four run lead the Pioneers broke the game open in the bottom of the third. Kaderka led the inning off with a single to left field. The next two hitters got out before a Moss single and Watson walk loaded the bases for Marysa Trost. Trost worked a five pitch walk to bring Jones home then Moss scored off a passed ball to give Western a 6-0 lead. The final damage was done when Fox hit her third home run of the day . This one a three run missile to left-center field to give the Pioneers a 9-0 lead that would go on to be the final score.

Kelsey Watson threw the last two frames for the Pioneers and allowed no runs while striking out four.

Kaderka (6-3) got her second win of the day throwing three scoreless innings and did not allow a hit. Emery Fox led the charge for the Pioneer offense with two home runs and five rbi’s in game two. Maggie McBrayer added two hits and a rbi in the second contest.

“We were able to get a lot of things done today,” said head coach Mike McBrayer. “Our pitchers didn’t have to throw as many innings and the catchers got a little break too which was important when playing four straight days. We just need to roll today over to tomorrow and get a couple of conference wins.”

Western hosted Eastern Oklahoma State in a conference double-header this afternoon
