The Altus High Bulldogs had their chances but fell to the Chickasha Chicks 5-3 in the first district game of the season at Kiwanis Park.
Altus trailed 5-1 going into the home half of the fifth inning when the Bulldogs came up with two runs. A double by Justin Sanchez, a infield hit by Hunter Harris plus a two-out hit accounted for the runs. There was also a Chickasha error that helped out.
The Bulldogs had a chance to tie it in the sixth inning when Sanchez walked and Harris singled. Both runners moved up to second and third on a passed ball but Kasen Warren grounded out to end the inning.
In the seventh inning Felix Santillan walked with one out and moved to second on a ground out by Jacob Guthrie. The game then ended in a different way, the old hidden ball trick.
Chickasha pitcher Ryker Stillman bluffed a throw to second while second baseman Luke Dixon and shortstop Derek Sullivan dove to the ground as if there was a wild throw. Santillan took off for third but was tagged out in a run down.
Harris finished with a two for four day. Warren, Maldonado and Sanchez all had one hit.
Altus is 1-5 and 0-1 in district play. They traveled to Chickasha today for a return match with the Chicks.
Bulldog notes: The Bulldogs were unable to finish their portion of the Altus Invitational Tournament on Saturday. The Bulldogs were to have played Cache in the third place game, however, because of the Saturday morning rain tournament officials could only get the field ready for two games. The consolation championship and the championship game were played.
The Lawton High Wolverines defeated Childress, Texas to win the tournament title.
