Four home runs spark Lady Pioneers

Western Oklahoma State College (19-5, 5-3) swept a double-header from Garden City Community College on Tuesday. The Pioneers got a shutout from Kelsey Watson in game one to win 5-0. Western came from behind to win 7-3 in game two.

Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Emily Jones hit a line drive over the left-center field wall for a solo home run. Malori Moss followed with a walk and scored when Watson doubled off the center field wall to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead going to the fifth.

Watson had a quick inning in the circle in the top of the fifth getting a double play and a strikeout. Emery Fox led the bottom of the frame off reaching safely off a Garden City error. Maggie McBrayer followed hitting a 1-1 pitch over the center field wall to stretch the lead to four. The Pioneers got two more runners on off a Katy Fletcher single and Jones hit by pitch but did not score again in the inning.

Western got one more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Ashlyn Tharp led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Tharp scored two batters later off a Fox single making the score 5-0.

Garden City got the bases loaded in the top of the seventh before Watson got a strikeout and a pop up to end the game.

Kelsey Watson (11-2) got her fourth shutout of the year working all seven inning and striking out nine. Western got home runs from Maggie McBrayer and Emily Jones in the contest.

Garden City got on top early in game two with an unearned run in the first and another unearned run in the second off Western starter Bailee Kaderka. The Pioneers got one back in the bottom of the second. Fletcher led the inning off with a single down the right field line. Watson singled later in the inning to move Fletcher to third. Garden City then committed an error on an Ashley Rutledge ground ball to make the score 2-1.

Kaderka retired the side in order in the top of three to bring Western to the plate. The Pioneers tied the game up on the first pitch of the inning when McBrayer connected for her second home run of the day.

Garden City reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth with one run. Down one, the Pioneers started the bottom of the inning off with an infield single from Fox. McBrayer followed with a single to center field. Bailey Spencer then drove the first pitch off the scoreboard in left field for a three run bomb. The homer gave Western a 5-3 lead.

Watson came on to pitch out of the pen in the top of the sixth and worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the lead at two. Western picked up two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. Rutledge got things started with a one out single to right field. Fox then delivered a rbi double to left-center field. McBrayer followed with a rbi single to center field to make the score 7-3.

The leadoff hitter reached base for Garden City in the top of the seventh but Watson got two pop ups and a strike outs in the next three hitters to end the game.

Bailee Kaderka (8-3) picked up the win for Western while Kelsey Watson got her third save of the year. Kaderka worked five innings allowing only one earned run. Watson finished the final two innings allowing only one base runner. Maggie McBrayer led the offense with three hits including a home run and two rbi’s. Emery Fox and Ashley Rutledge added two hits.

Western will travel to Tonkawa, on Thursday for a conference double-header against NOC-Tonkawa. First game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
