It was a short meeting for the Altus School with all business being concluded within 30 minutes Tuesday evening.

The meeting started with Board President Keith Phillips recognizing Superintendent Bob Drury recently being named District #13 2009 Superintendent of the Year by the Oklahoma Association of School Administrators.

On the agenda was an item pertaining to the Altus School’s swimming pool facility. It was brought to their attention by the City of Altus that the an upgrade was needed to the pool’s drains and purification system. The City and School will split the cost of the upgrades. The Board approved the upgrades with the school’s portion to be approximately $18,000.

In the absence of Coach Rick Roop, Altus High School principal Mark Haught gave a report on the Winter Sports teams naming many of their accomplishments including the boys basketball team winning the most games in a season since 1999, the girls basketball team getting just one game away from the state tournament, the boys swimming team having only 1 loss this year, the girls swimming team getting 20 wins and only 5 losses and the wrestling team getting 15 wins and only 7 losses.

“They all did excellent this season and we are looking forward to what our athletes will do next,” Haught said.

A public hearing was opened during the meeting to discuss the Altus Schools’ 2009-2014 Comprehensive Local Education Plan (CLEP) but there were no comments or suggestions from the audience, so the hearing was closed.

Nancy Evans then presented the school’s CLEP plan that she said focused on improving literacy and math skills, as well as student attendance.

The Board then adopted a resolution to use certain sales tax proceeds for improvents at Altus High School. The money will be received through the MAPS tax that was approved last year and went into effect March 1 of this year.

All teacher contract items were approved included the hiring of three new teachers, vocal music teacher Lanette Manes at Washington Elementary, chemistry and biology teacher Mac Powers at Altus High School, and art teacher Sandra Sneel at Altus Junior High.

The Board accepted the resignation agreement of William Smith, the retirements of Linda Goodin, Laverne Muller and Marcia Rowland; the reassignments of Rhonda Talsma, Sheryl Davis, Velda Mustard, Ashley Yeager and Kandy Newton.
