Defensively it was one of the the best games of the year for the Altus High Bulldogs. But they could not come up with enough of offense and lost a 4-2 decision to the Duncan Demons here on Tuesday afternoon.
The Demons got hits when they needed it and two superb defensive plays helped turn the tide their favor.
Altus High starting pitcher Cale Hand had some hard luck when gave up three runs in the fourth inning. Duncan managed five hits but four were soft bleeders and another was an infield hit.
The Bulldogs scored two in the fourth inning when Austin Beisel reached on a base hit and scored on a double by Hand. Another run crossed home plate via a Demon error.
The final run came off the bat of Tyler Wilkins who led off the Duncan sixth inning with a home run over the left field fence.
Duncan got an outstanding defensive play in the fifth inning when second baseman Kale Thaxton leaped high to snare a line drive off the bat of Braden Warren. He then threw to first base to double off Brandon Ybarra who had reached base on an error.
Zack Neely led off the Altus sixth inning with a scoring double. Beisel then came up and laced a single to right field that Duncan’s Hunter Green fielded. Green threw a shot and easily got Neely at the platef for the first out of the inning.
“You make plays like that and you have a chance to win,” AHS coach James Rubi said.
The top hitters in the Bulldogs order had a bad day. Collectively they were two for 15.
“I thought Cale pitched a good game,” Rubi said. “We’re getting better. We played with some enthusiasm.”
Altus played without starting shortstop Derrick Bull. He has aggravated a groin injury he suffered during basketball season. He is listed as day to day.
Altus, 9-11 on the season will travel to Lawton MacArthur on Thursday for a 4 p.m. game.
