The Great Plains Literacy Council has received literacy materials, valued at $2,000, from ProLiteracy Worldwide through its National Book Scholarship Fund (NBSF). This NBSF grant will help expand the resources for tutors, tutor training, and students of literacy and English-as-a-Second language programs.

“This grant has provided educational materials that we might not have otherwise been able to afford,” stated Mel Rader, Council Vice President. “With support from the NBSF, our tutors and students will not have to share textbooks and resources. Also, our satellite sites outside of the Altus Public Library will have materials making it more convenient for all the staff, volunteer tutors, and students.” Some of the educational materials include Health Stories, English in Context Series, Challenger, Laubach Skill Books, Patterns in Spelling, and Voyager Reading and Writing. These will be used in the TANF Success Class at the Seg Hove Center, Hollis Library literacy program, and other local locations, plus tutoring at the Altus Public Library.

ProLiteracy Worldwide was formed by the 2002 merger of Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., both based in Syracuse, New York. ProLiteracy Worldwide provides volunteer tutors and literacy programs with professional training certification and curriculum resources they need to teach basic literacy or English for speakers of other languages. The Great Plains Literacy Council provided funding up to 20 percent of the grant amount and will provide a follow-up written report.

“Adults students who struggle with literacy are often discouraged and want curriculum on their level that will help them learn to read, write, or speak English and apply it to their present lives,” remarked outgoing Council President Rachel Beckner. “These materials will make a positive impact in the learning experiences of adult learners.”

Anyone who would like to volunteer or who would like to improve his/her literacy skills is encouraged to call the Great Plains Literacy Council at 580-477-2890.

The Literacy Council is dedicated to providing learner-centered literacy instruction.
