The old Jackson County Jail, built in the 1970s, is going to be demolished. The first step in the process is asbestos abatement work which started this week. Cost to remove the material is $20,000. After that project, the County will begin tearing down the structure which once housed the Sheriff’s office and jail. Overcrowding conditions led to the County constructing a new law enforcement center on South Main a few years ago. The project should be completed sometime this winter. The county plans to add additional courthouse parking after the demolition and possibly adding a courthouse annex. Shown working on the jail Wednesday include Alfredo Ramirez, Chris Chapman and William Bottom.
