Recognitions made at WOSC Regents meeting

Chairperson Dean Graumann and President Randy Cumby expressed their appreciation to Rep. Charles Ortega and Sen. Mike Schulz for their support and commitment to higher education at Tuesday’s Western Oklahoma State College Board of Regents meeting. Randy Sheets, former chairperson, was also recognized for his commitment during the 2008-2009 year. Graumann congratulated Guy Smith, rodeo coach, on his success this past year.

Tricia Latham, director of finance and budgets/controller, presented the possibility of Western changing its current healthcare coverage to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma. The current healthcare provider is projecting a price increase of 12 percent in January. Latham said the college and its employees will see a savings by changing the healthcare coverage.

Dr. Phil Birdine, vice-president of academic and student support services, reported that fall enrollment is up 10 percent from last fall. He also announced that Elizabeth Wallace, chemistry instructor, was recently selected as a Fulbright Scholar. Wallace will travel to Israel this fall for research and other educational opportunities.

Larry Duffy, vice-president for development and alumni relations, thanked the regents and executive council at Western for their support of the 19th annual Jim Holland Memorial Golf Tournament, which was held Saturday. The Jim Holland Scholarship fund now reaches $174,000.

In personnel matters, the Board approved the personal resignations of Bruce Wiese, vice-president for business affairs, effective Dec. 31, 2009, and Bobb Johnston, softball coach. The Board also approved the employment of Sara Linneen, agriculture instructor, Mike McBrayer, softball coach, Casey Daniels, english and speech instructor, and Lisa Davis, WINDS clerk.

The next meeting is set for Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Board of Regents room at Western Oklahoma State College.
