Joyce was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Danville, Ark., to Jeff and Osie (Moonses) Wilson. She moved with her family to Oklahoma in 1927. She was raised in the Blair area. Joyce graduated from Midway High School in 1943. She married Oscar (Junior) Howard in Electra, Texas, on April 23, 1947. They made their home in Altus. In 1953, she and Junior moved to Los Alamos, N.M., where he husband worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. They later moved to Las Cruces in 1963. Joyce, along with her husband and son, moved back to Altus in July 1966. She started working for Montogomery Ward in 1969 and retired in 1986 after 17 years of faithful service.
Joyce was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Altus and was part of the Willing Workers Sunday School class.
Her beloved husband, Junior, preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Dixon Wilson; and three sisters, Lela Burke, Doris Stroud and Hazel Wilson.
Joyce is survived by her son, Joe Michael Howard and wife Janet of Altus; four grandchildren, Shane Howard, Tammy Darden and hsuband Keith, David Holder and wife Joy, Ike Holder and wife Kat; five great-grandchildren, Jordan Adkins, David Lee Holder, Christopher Holder, Teena Darden, and Dakota Holder; her sister-in-law, Odessa Wilson of Independence, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and many friends.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Parkinson’s Foundation or to the charity of your choice.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Aug. 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Lowell-Tims Chapel with the Rev. Boyd Whitehead officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
