You couldn’t blame Altus High School head football coach Lyn Hepner for playing the “what if” game following his team’s contest with El Reno here on Friday night which also featured a lightning delay.
The Bulldogs thoroughly dominated the Indians in the first half and yet they led only 3-0. El Reno turned the tide in the second and took advantage its opportunities to record a 22-3 District 5A -1 victory.
The first 24 minutes was all Altus. The Bulldogs had 127 yards of offense and eight first downs. The Bulldogs defense held El Reno in check holding them to just six total yards and no first downs in the first 24 minutes.
It was almost a perfect start when the Bulldogs took the opening kickoff. After a delay of game penalty the Bulldogs went back to its on 15 yard line and went a time consuming 17 play drive. Quarterback Austin Beisel, fullbacks Tyler George and Ryan Feller, plus tailbacks Trevor Sterling and Gerard Harris, all played a part in the drive.
But disaster struck on the 17th play. It was second and goal from the three and a mis exchanges on a handfoff put the ball on the ground and El Reno’s Jovia Franklin pounced on it killing the drive.
“That was a beautiful drive, the only thing that was missing was a touchdown,” Hepner said.
Altus forced El Reno to punt after three downs and got good field position at the Indians 31. But three plays netted only one yard and Altus settled for a field goal attempt. Freshman kicker Michael Perez nailed a 47-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
That was the score at halftime and Hepner reflected on what might have been. “You have to get more points,” Hepner said. “We turned it over early. That cost us a touchdown.”
El Reno scored on its first possession of the second half. It was a 61 yard drive in 10 plays. Devante Moore capped the drive with a five yard run.
On a busted PAT attempt, the holder Dylan Abner raced in for the two point conversion and El Reno led with 6:06 remaining in the third period.
Early in the fourth quarter Altus found themselves deep in their own territory in heavy down pour of rain.
Beisel punted out of the end zone but could not get a lot on the kick in the down poor. El Reno took over on the Bulldogs 21 yard line.
El Reno had a second and two situation at the Altus 13 when with 9:01 left in the game, the officials halted the game because of lightning.
The delay lasted for 80 minutes. When play resumed it took El Reno three plays to score on a Cory Dauphin four yard run.
Altus tried a fake punt on its next possession and that was stopped. El Reno took over on the Bulldogs 35.The Indians scored two plays; later on a 30 yard run by Perez.
Altus was never really in the game after that.
“I was a little disappointed the way we came back out (after the delay),” Hepner said.” I told the kids I have never dealt with this in 31 years. We changed clothes at halftime. They were hungry and we fed them Everything you could do we did.”
Bulldog notes: “ Was that not a tale of two halves?,” Hepner asked. “There was a big swing. Here’s what I told them at the end: If I remember right, the team that won this game (Altus-El Reno last year) did not win district and the team that lost this game did win district. There’s still hope. We laid ourselves out a tougher road. These kids have worked hard and it’s time for something good to happen to them. I’m not faulting our effort.”
