Although a start date for demolition and construction hasn’t been set, bids were awarded this week for work on a new wing at Altus High School. The project is being funded through the MAPS sales tax that is also helping to pay for the Altus Municipal Complex on South Main.

Bids awarded were for the demolition and site clearing, earthwork and utilities.

“The bids are for the entire project,” said Valerie Roberts, public affairs officer for the schools, “but the work will be done in stages.”

After the new wing is completed, and when the interior of the north wing is demolished and reconstructed, students will then move back into the north wing to allow the south wing, where the students are now, to be demolished and reconstructed.

Although a start date has not yet been set, completion of the entire project, including the development of a new library and media center, is expected to be by 2012.

Winning bids went to Material Supply Inc. of Clinton for the site clearing at a cost of $42,095; Altus Sand and Gravel Co. for earthwork at a cost of $94,999; Pippin Brothers of Lawton for site utilities at a cost of $55,260; and Joe D. Hall Construction of Elk City for interior demolition at a cost of $278,800.
