The Bulldogs are 17-0 on the dual season and they made a shamble of the district duals at Oklahoma City Western Heights on Tuesday night.
They defeated Oklahoma City Southeast 49-15, Oklahoma City Western Heights 69-3 and Chickasha 75-3.
The sweep of districts qualifies the Bulldogs for next month’s State Dual Tournament next month at Skiatook.
The second ranked Bulldogs will probably go into that tournament as the number one seed on the west side of the state. Top ranked Claremore should be the number one seed from the east side.
The district dual victories came on the heels of the Midwest City Carl Albert Tournament where the Bulldogs won the championship. Altus won the tournament by a 40 point margin. The Bulldogs’ nearest competitor was Harrah.
Altus crowned two individual champions.
Freshman Keilan Torres remained unbeaten and easily had the most impressive performance in the tournament. He built up a 15-5 lead over Duncan’s Colton Ballard. Late in the match he reversed Ballard to his back and won the championship match with a fall with 11 seconds remain.
Earlier in the tournament Torres upset number seed Jeb Todd of Ada, 7-6.
He was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.
Torres is now 19-0 and won 16 of his matches by fall.
No. 1 seed Jamie Copeland of Ada was no match for Alex Cobos of Altus in the 103 pound final. Cobos got a takedown and three back points early and it’s 5-0 after one. After Cobos rides out the second period, he escaped early in the third and adds a takedown with 56 seconds left for an 8-0 major decision to win the tournament title.
Others who placed included Jeremy Delzer (145), 2nd; Moises Julian (112), 5th; Matt Willhite (119), 4th; Kanyon Weldon (130), 4th; Ty Stevens (135), 4th; Drake Martel, (152), 4th: Trevor Sterling (160), 5th; Tyler George (177), 4th: Jacob Billarrial (HWT), 4th.
It’s been a successful year so far for the Bulldogs and Williams credits that he has some tough wrestlers that are working hard.
“Everyone of our kids are hard-nosed kids,” Williams said. “They will fight you to the end. That’s why we’re so tough. If they get hit in the mouth then they are going hit them back in the mouth. That’s our mentality.”
Altus returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Midwestern duals at Southmore. They will wrestle Ark City, Kan., Berryhill and highly touted Tulsa Union.
