Altus trailed 7-1 however a big at bat by Robby Suniga got the Bulldogs back in the game. Suniga stroked a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to make it 7-5.
Altus could not score in the seventh inning.
The main culprit was defense. The Bulldogs committed eight errors and five of the MacArthur runs were unearned.
Suniga had two hits in three trips to the plate and he drove in all five runs. Sophomore Matt Roby was two for four. Shelby Worbes and Austin Beisel each had one hit.
Bulldog notes: The Bulldogs have shown a lot more power at the plate this season. Suniga’s blast was the team’s 16th of the year. Last year, Altus hit only three.
Worbes was on the mound during the game. He picked two runners, one off of second base and one off of first. Altus has picked off 26 runners this season in 24 games.
The Bulldogs are 11-13 on the season. They will host Elgin in a 4:30 p.m. game Thursday.
Altus will learn Friday of its Class 5A Regional assignment. AHS coach Joe Johnson wouldn’t guess on where the Bulldogs may be sent.
“You never know,” Johnson said. “One year they sent us to Carl Albert.
Carl Albert, Chickasha and Deer Creek are possibilities.
