Dr. DeNoble, former research scientist for Philip Morris (maker of Marlboro cigarettes), will discuss the addictive nature of nicotine and the tobacco Industry’s attempt to hide important health information from the public. As an experimental psychologist, DeNoble has been a key witness in government hearings examining the practices of the tobacco industry. His testimony was an important part of the mounting evidence that damaged the tobacco industry’s creditability and ultimately led to the multi-billion dollar “tobacco settlement.”
The Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust was created by a voter-approved amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution in 2000, which specifies that only the earnings from the trust fund may be spent on programs to improve the health and well-being of Oklahomans. To date, the fund has generated more than $63 million in earnings, including $18 million last year alone.
Jackson County Health Department is the lead agency for the Jackson County Tobacco Education Committee which will host Dr. DeNoble’s presentations on Monday, May 10, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., during the luncheon for the Reverend James Mahan ‘Cancer Touches Everyone’ Symposium.
