The discussion regarding the fascia material on the east side to the Jackson County Courthouse came up again during the Monday, May 24 County Commissioners' meeting. During the officer reports section of the meeting, County Assessor, Gerald Sherrill Jr., asked the status of the matter. Commissioner Dale Dunn is working with Phil Burk on getting qualified estimates for the specialized work on the historical building. County Clerk Christi Hair asked if funding might be available through the State Historical Society. Dunn said that about three years ago, Jenny Buchanan put the JC Courthouse on the state list for historical sites. But funding from the state comes up rarely. Dunn guessed that it might be two to three weeks until they get more names of qualified entities to handle the repair to the ice-damaged fascia. In the meantime, the last inspection indicated that it would be safe to reopen the east entry to the courthouse. The commissioners approved that with lawn areas will be cordoned off until the repair is complete.

Also during the officers' reports, County Treasurer Janet Wright said the south parking lot really needs some maintenance. The planting looks nice, but there is debris and things will need to be watered to survive. Christi Hair mentioned that the estimate of needs on salaries will be ready soon.

The minutes of the May 17 and the special meeting, May 19 were approved. There was one blanket purchase order from the Health Department, which was approved, and there were no reports to approve.

Both Dr. LIonel Cross and Dr. M. George Zakhary were reappointed, by approval of the commissioners, as trustees at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

The commissioners approved an agreement between Jackson County and the Canadian County Juvenile Detention facility. The rate for each juvenile to be housed there will now be $19.31 per day.

The commissioners approved the blood drive for Jackson County on Thursday, July 15, from 1 - 5 p.m. The goal is to have 20 donors. They should have at least 30 donors signed up to fulfill their goal. The mobile blood bank will be set up in the north parking lot for the blood drive.

The commissioners approved advertising for bids for road and bridge materials, tires and herbicides.

They took no action on an installation permit for Gavilon. It was not required.

There was no new business.

In public participation items, Jim Billington, reported to the commissioners that a good wheat harvest will bring heavy traffic, with lots of semis on county roads. "A lot of wheat will be going to Eldorado," Billington said. "West of the Martha Bridge (the road) is bad." Crews made of locals and contractors from Nebraska are ready to go, according to Billington. Depending on the weather, "the harvest will probably start next Monday," he said. Rick Riffe, from the State Auditor's Office stepped in to thank the commissioners and said his crew was preparing to leave.

There were no vendor participation items. The claims were all approved and the meeting was adjourned at 10:50 a.m.
