Each Christmas season members of the Altus Police take children to Wal-Mart as part of “Cops, Kids & Christmas” and allow them to pick out gifts for their families. Wal-Mart and other businesses partner with the Altus Police Department and DHS on the project. After the kids have shopped, they are told there is still money left to buy themselves something. Police Chief Mike Patterson said the kids usually want to buy more for others, but they are made to buy something for themselves.
