William Jackson “Jack” Camp was born April 15, 1918, to James Samuel Camp and Myrtle (Bryant) Camp in Rocky, Oklahoma and passed away Monday, June 28, 2010 in the Clinton Veterans Center in Clinton.
“Jack” was raised in Rocky and the Sentinel area, and as a young man he moved to Cordell and worked with his father.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1944 and he served in the 89th Field Artillery Battalion during WWII. He received numerous medals including Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal; Philippine Liberation Ribbon; Army of Occupation Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in November 1946.
He returned back to Oklahoma and worked as an electrician and welder. He worked his way back and forth from Clinton to California and finally settled in Clinton and worked for Graves Manufacturing Company.
He married Miss Roberta Jarnagin on September 17, 1948. They had made their home in Arapaho where they owned and operated Camp’s Grocery Store for several years. His wife preceded him in death in 1970.
He married Ms Marie Lee Schenewolf in 1972 and they made their home in Arapaho.
He was employed and retired from the Clinton Veterans Center where worked in maintenance and electrical.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jerri Lynne (Camp) Cary in June 1987; a brother, Victor Camp; and three sisters, Margie Gorman, Lavada “Boot” Peeler and Delka “Pat” Bradley.
He was a member of the Arapaho Baptist Church, was a member of the Midwest CB Club in Clinton, Talk-A- Lots CB Break in Altus and went by the handle of “Bumper Jack.”
He was a huge professional baseball fan; enjoyed working in his garden and taking care of his fruit trees; competitive domino player, enjoyed going to auctions and fishing.
He is survived by his wife Marie of the home; a grandson, Chris Cary and wife Tanya of Altus; three step-daughters, Ruth Ann Wagner, Clinton Alfreda Wells and husband Bill of Clinton and Virginia Jantz of Missouri; and a stepson, Ervin Schenewolf and wife Peggy of Butler; and a son-in-law, Terry Cary, Altus.
