The goal of the fair is to introduce members of the Hispanic community to local financial service providers and to promote financial well-being. Local bankesr, insure agencies, realtors, accountants and other financial service providers will be present to offer information about local services and to answer questions. Financial service providers with booths include budgeting, identity theft, scams, investing, real estate and others.
Children activities also will be included at the fair. Children’s activities include piggy bank painting, food taste testing, coloring, and duct tape projects. The decorated piggy banks will be judged after the fair. Prizes will be awarded. A light meal will be provided.
On Friday, March 7, 2007, there will be a Money Smarts Program as the second activity in this financial series from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the library. Money Smarts is an internet based series of finance programs developed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or FDIC. The FDIC is an agency that insures deposits in banks and protects consumers by educating the public about issues dealing with financial well-being.
Money Smarts include internet video clips of ten area of financial information including banking services borrowing, budgeting, saving, using credit and credit cards, buying a home, and common financial scams. Participants will “tour” the Money Smart program and have a chance to view the programs of their choice. Volunteers will be available to assist participants who need computer assistance. There will be a storytime for the children and refreshments will be available.
On Saturday, March 8, the third and last activity of the series will be offered from 3 to 4 p.m. at the librar. A Basic Tax Presentation will be held by Virginia Goskey, RSVP Director. The presentation will include topics such as the difference between federal, state, county (property taxes), and city (sales taxes), where tax money goes, tax rights and responsibilities, individual identification numbers, tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit, and where to obtain help with filing taxes. The prizes for the piggy banks contest will be awarded. Refreshments will be available.
The fair, program, and activities are free. People of all ages who speak Spanish are welcome. The event will be held in the activities rooms at the library.
