Commerce and the Oklahoma Community Institute. The award-winning communities showcased were Altus/Southwest Oklahoma Community Action, Boswell, Durant, Kingston, Goldsby, Hobart, Mangum, Owasso, and Sperry.
Southwest Oklahoma Community Action Group, Inc. and the City of Altus share a long history of partnering to provide services that enhance the community.
One example is the development of affordable housing in the southwest part of Altus. Empty lots and dilapidated houses were replaced with energy-efficient, safe, affordable homes that are on the tax rolls.
A second example of the partnership at work is the Altus Express. In response to a community need, Southwest Transit operates the Altus Express on Friday and Saturday evenings. The free service originates at the Altus Air Force Base beginning at 6 p.m. and stops at various business locations throughout the evening.
"It's an honor to be recognized for 'excellence'. Southwest Community Action is committed to improving the communities it serves and dedicated to helping people help themselves," commented Neil Montgomery, Executive Director of Southwest Oklahoma Community Action Group, Inc.
Participants showcased the positive impact they've had on their communities as well as the public/private partnerships developed through their efforts.
The event highlighted community improvements and economic development accomplishments. The event kicked off with remarks from Lieutenant Governor Jari Askins and Natalie Shirley, Secretary of Commerce and Tourism and Executive Director of the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.
