The Coffee Cup Bunch of the Friends of the Library will meet Wednesday, May 7 and hear a review of "The Freedom Writers Diary" presented by Deb Teagan.

This non-fiction book is the story of a teacher who, when told that her students couldn't learn, set out to understand them through their histories and their passions. Through her belief that everyone can make a difference, she reached students previously labeled as un-teachable, helping most of them to become the first high school graduates in their families. For many of her students, college became a reality never before dreamed of.

Written by the Freedom Writers and Erin Gruwell, the book was published in 1999 and was the inspiration for the recent Paramount motion picture "The Freedom Writers," released in 2007.

“I read this book after I saw the movie because I wanted to get a sense of the individual students whose writings have been translated to the screen,” Teagan explained. “This book rekindled in me the desire to follow the path set before me with all of my passion, enthusiasm and ingenuity. Roadblocks may come, but the Freedom Writers helped me to remember that those obstacles are opportunities to explore new visions for work and life.”

Teagan is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and currently serves as the Adult Discipleship Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Altus. She is a member of the South Carolina Annual Conference, having also served as a pastor in South Carolina, Illinois and North Dakota. Deb is married to Lt Col Shawn Teagan, who is the 54 ARS Commander at Altus Air Force Base. They have lived in 7 states and one foreign country during their 13-year marriage.

The Coffee Cup Bunch of the Friends of the Library meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Altus Public Library. The meetings are free and open to the public.
