The Haz-Mat team, under the direction of the Altus Fire Department, responded to a chemical spill on South Main Street at about 10:45 a.m. Wedenesday.
According to Altus Fire Chief J.R. Wheeler, Larry Robbins, a local cotton farmer, was on his way to spray his cotton fields south of town, when his truck load shifted and overturned, spilling 6 gallons of Temick herbicide onto the city street.
Chief Wheeler said that when incidents such as this happen, proper procedure is for the Haz-Mat team to respond and block off the section of contaminated road to keep the area safe for passers-by.
The accident happened in the 300 block of S. Main and the area was shut off to traffic for several hours.
Those responding to the scene included the Altus Fire Department, Jackson County EMS and the Altus Police Department.
