The Altus Board of Education unanimously voted to appoint the firm of Boynton, Williams and Associates as the architect for the school district’s MAPS project during its regular meeting in the board conference room at the administrative center on Tuesday evening.

The school project is part of a package of proposed facilities that will be contained in a sales tax bond issue that will be submitted to local voters on August 26.

The board also voted to continue the school district’s property insurance coverage for another year with the Oklahoma Schools Insurance Group, a group that includes a majority of Oklahoma public school districts.

The premium for the coverage of $252,563 for this year is less than last year, according to school officials.

Board members also voted to re-employ Jay Richeson as Will Rogers Elementary principal after Richeson requested the board to reconsider his earlier request.

In other business, the board of education decided to proceed with the purchase of three school buses--two new yellow activity buses for $256,500, and one used 2006 model route bus for $50,000, all from Ross Transportation Co. of Oklahoma City.

The panel also approved action to bid on property adjacent to Sunset Elementary School at 1823 Oklahoma Drive which will be sold at auction.

Darrell Moss and Keith Phillips will represent the board during the bidding process.

Personnel actions at the school board meeting included approval of new hires: Blake Delao, band & general music at Altus Intermediate School; Brian Givens, language arts at AIS; Betsy Golden, Pre-K teacher at Sunset; Tim Hardwick, social studies at Altus Jr. High; Brenda Mahan, kindergarten at Washington; Tanya Morales, Spanish at Altus HS; Kaylee Thornbrough, language arts at AIS; and Lisa Wahrmund, English at Altus HS.
