The theme of the conference was “Attitude…Ability…Achievement” and the participants were also able to attend two workshops. The keynote speaker was John Zickefoose, who does Community Outreach for the Crona Public Library in California. Mr. Zickefoose is a spokesman and board member for ProLiteracy Worldwide. In his motivating presentation, he shared his experiences as a former adult learner and how attitude, ability, and achievement apply to everyone’s personal life.
After his keynote speech, he later taught a workshop on how important attitude is to success, the fact that everyone has the ability to succeed, and how you have to believe you can do it.
“John had active presentation and included the audience in discussion,” said Harry Nolen. “We also got to hear Jessie Cradduck, a preacher and author, talk about his determination to learn to read. He had been a former literacy student with the Norman Literacy Council and has authored a book called I Believe I Can Fly.
Another workshop called “Creative Learning” was another topic taught by Shannon Carter, instructor at the Oklahoma City Opportunities Industrialization Center. In this fun hands-on workshop, she taught them ways to help themselves in reading, vocabulary and math.
“This was my second year to attend this kind of conference,” said Harold Wilson. “It challenged me to continue setting goals to achieve with my attitude and abilities.”
Funding for the leadership conference for adult learners in literacy programs came from federal funds made possible by the Library Services and Technology Act. Kerri Miles, Student Leadership Coordinator for the OK Department of Libraries, arranged the conference. The Oklahoma Literacy Coalition Adult Learner representative Tom Morton facilitated the conference.
