Four inmates were stabbed and taken to local hospitals for treatment after a fight broke out at the Granite Reformatory Monday afternoon. Nine others were treated at the faciity for various injuries.
According to Oklahoma Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie, the fight started about 3 p.m. Monday afternoon during a fire drill.
Massie said Monday’s fight may have been in retaliation to the May 19 prison fight that left two inmates dead and 12 others injured. That fight was triggered after one prisoner spit on another.
“It may also be about something else, so for now, the incident is still under investigation and the entire facility is on lockdown,” Massie said.
Since the May 19 fight the reformatory has made changes to help insure that such incidents do not happen again. One of the changes has been to only allow one unit at a time in the yard.
“This fight was among inmates from only one housing unit. They were the only inmates on the yard at the time,” Massie explained.
The facility is currently being searched for weapons.
