The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Eric Clayton Huckaby was pronounced dead at the scene from massive injuries sustained in the head-on collision.
Troopers said Huckaby was driving a 2007 Mazda northbound on SH 54, and 58 year-old Patty Schimmer of Custer City was the driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban traveling south. For some unknown reason, Huckaby went left of center. The other motorists tried to avoid a collision by steering off the roadway to the right.
Huckaby was ejected upon impact.
Officers said Schimmer was pinned in her vehicle for approximately 40 minutes. She was taken by Medi-Flight to OU Medical Center with multiple injuries and was listed in critical condition.
Three passengers in Schimmer’s vehicle were also hurt. Critically injured were 15 year-old Paul Blake of Thomas and 15 year-old Aaron M. Slagell of Weatherford. 14 year-old Joshua Jantzen of Weatherford was treated and released at the Weatherford hospital.
Seatbelts were equipped but not in use in Huckaby’s vehicle. They were equipped and in use by the driver and front seat passenger of vehicle two. It was not known if the backseat passengers were belted in.
Trooper Kendall Johnson of the Custer County detachment of the OHP was the lead investigator.
