Altus Police Chief Mike Patterson said if the tags were stolen, the thieves that took them “just weren’t thinking.”
Patterson said that these tag numbers will go into the state’s computer system as stolen.
“If a vehicle is stopped for any reason and the tag is run, the person driving it will more than likely be arrested on the spot,” he explained. “What these people don’t realize is that they are not just stealing a tag, they are stealing taxes due the state, and that is a serious crime.”
Patterson said the person could even be looking at fines, jail time, and at the very least probation.
