Saisha Nichole Meyer, 19, of Elk City, was southbound on US Highway 283 Monday around 3:15 p.m. when she ran off the right side of the road, impacting with a culvert. The vehicle, a 2001 Ford Escort, then overturned 1 1/2 times, coming to rest on its top.
Passenger Joshua Allen Long, 18, of Elk City, was ejected approximately 30 feet from the point of rest. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Long was transported by Air Evac to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with head and internal injuries where he was admitted in critical condition.
An 8-month-old infant was also a passenger in the vehicle. She was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital with trunk external injuries. She was treated and released.
The driver was also transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital with head and arm injuries. She was admitted in fair condition.
The driver was said to be sleepy when the accident happened.
The accident was investigated by Trooper Steve Pothorst of the Jackson County Detachment of Troop M. He was assisted by Troopers Jimmy Wallace, Tyler Shelby, Michael Jewell, Anthony Linares, Lt. George Dickerson, the Altus Fire Department, Jackson County EMS and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
