Hilt worked the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift as a dishwasher and was on his way to work at the Friendship Inn Restaurant on North Main.
According to reports, the school bus had just returned from a swim meet, and had already dropped off the students before the accident occurred. The driver of the bus, William Getz, had just refueled the bus and was east bound on Falcon Road when he collided with Hilt who was coming out of the alleyway north bound between Sherwin- Williams and the Plaza Shopping Center. Getz was not injured.
Hilt received critical injuries and was transported by Jackson County EMS to Jackson County Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Fault in the accident has not yet been determined, but a special investigation team with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has been called in to assist with the investigation by Altus PD Officers Hurd and Uptergrove.
Valerie Roberts, Public Relations Director for Altus Schools, said that they are cooperating fully with police on the matter, but could not make a statement until a copy of the police report is complete and made available to them.
