Well, once again the Holiday season is upon us! Time does fly, doesn’t it. Seems like I am just recovering from last Christmas and here it is again. With the Holiday season here, people will be out shopping for gifts for their loved ones. I want to use this column to pass along some helpful security tips from the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office.

Keep all receipts and compare them with credit card and bank statements.  If the receipts don’t match the statements, report the problem immediately.

Be aware of who might be looking over your shoulder when typing in Personal Identity Numbers (PINs) at the register or an ATM.

If a store clerk asks you to include a Social Security Number (SSN) when writing a check, ensure that those in line behind you can’t see the number.  Ask if you can use your driver’s license number instead of your SSN.  If your driver’s license number and SSN are the same, consider having your driver’s license number changed.

Do not leave purchases in plain sight in an unattended vehicle.  Put them in the trunk, and lock the car.  Don’t leave purses, wallets or money in a vehicle.

Destroy documents containing personal information including expired credit cards and pre-approved credit card applications.

Do not keep your PIN number in your wallet or purse.  Put PIN numbers in a safe place in your home where they would not be found if your home was burglarized.

Leave extra credit cards, Social Security cards, birth certificates and passports at home in a safe place unless you are going to use them.

Remembering these tips can stop a thief from turning your shopping experience to an angry shade of red!

Holiday seasons always bring a rise to crime, and Tillman County is not immune from this. We have had one residential burglary on the county line in which some saddles and miscellaneous tools were taken. Comanche County has also had several residential burglaries in the southwest part of that county. The burglaries are occurring during the daylight hours of 10 am to 6 pm. Please keep a watchful eye out for suspicious activity and contact us here at the Sheriff’s Department. You may also call me directly on my cellphone :580-585-1237.

Merry Christmas to Everyone!
