“People just weren’t taking the precautions they should for such conditions,” said Police Chief Mike Patterson. “Luckily, all of the accidents reported so far have been minor with no injuries.”
Patterson said that as of 9 a.m., there had already been 12 accidents reported, one of which was in a private parking lot.
The overnight low in Altus was 12 degrees, but forecasts were to see temperatures rise to the mid 30s.
More freezing drizzle is forecast for Oklahoma, then slightly warmer temperatures are expected to move into the state.
The National Weather Service said tonight would be cloudy with scattered freezing drizzle across the state and lows ranging from the upper teens in the Panhandle and the northwest to the lower 30s across southern Oklahoma.
Wednesday is to remain cloudy, but mostly dry with highs varying from the mid to upper 30s from the Panhandle across northern Oklahoma to the upper 40s and lower 50s across far southern sections of the state.
Rain is forecast Thursday with afternoon temperatures mostly in the 40s and 50s, but approaching 60 degrees in the southeastern corner of the state.
