Joan Wilcoxen, Executive Director of the Altus ASYMCA explained, “The YMCA’s Activate America mission is pioneering healthier communities, a community level initiative to encourage and empower people to increase their level of physical activity and awareness of proper nutrition.
Improving the health of our community is a challenge that involves every citizen, and for more than 150 years, the YMCA has encouraged people to live healthy lifestyles. Through Activate America, the YMCA along with its community partners, is working to help our citizens live healthier and more fulfilling lives.”
Wilcoxen said a local family worked for months clearing storm damaged trees from their rural property when the Altus ASYMCA recruited Altus Airmen volunteers to assist them.
As part of the YMCA’s initiative for fitness, Activate America resulted in a tremendous opportunity for demonstrating the exceptional relationship between the local community and Altus Air Force Base volunteers. The volunteers who donated time made an amazing difference, and were able to accomplish in one day what would have taken months without them! Over two hundred hours of volunteer time were donated by dedicated Altus Airmen who cleared 2880 cubic feet of brush and ice damaged trees that had been spread over an acre of land, and stacked a pile of excess brush that was six feet high, forty feet long, and twelve feet wide.
Volunteers included: Mr. and Mrs. Michael Snyder and daughter Montana, SrA Jason Mavrogeorge, SSgt Sarah Conley, TSgt Randy Walgren, SSgt Dustin Steele, SSgt Travis Sidel, TSgt David Howell, TSgt Douglas J. Williams, A1C Bianca Jones, A1C Devin Lynch, A1C Michael Wichterman, A1C Pablo Aguilar, A1C Timothy Hartsfield, A1C Samuel Baker, A1C Steven Koss, AB Joshua Verran, and Mrs. Rosa Buckner.
ASYMCA Board members Mr. and Mrs. Darryl Knowles served a luncheon to the volunteers in a shady grove overlooking the Quartz Mountains, and a wonderful afternoon of service, fellowship, and fitness was enjoyed by all.
