Volunteer chaplains at Jackson County Memorial Hospital were recognized for their dedication of service at a recent hospital luncheon. The volunteer chaplains were honored by Sue Smaaland, Chaplain for Jackson County Memorial Hospital, the JCMH Case Management Department, Jim King, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer and William G. Wilson, President and Chief Executive Officer. Volunteer chaplains at Jackson County Memorial Hospital are: Alicia Giron, Ken Lyles, Max Gunn, Susie Sims, Kevin Baker, and Lloyd Lopez. The chaplaincy program at JCMH was established in 2004. Sue Smaaland is the full-time hospital chaplain. She and the volunteer chaplains assist patients and family members in the Intensive Care Unit, Inpatient areas and the Emergency Department. Smaaland provides a devotional service each Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the hospital's fourth floor waiting room. The service is open to everyone and is attended by patients, visitors and hospital staff. The chaplains have provided over 1800 hours to Jackson County Memorial hospital patients, visitors, and staff since the volunteer chaplaincy program began in 2006. Chaplain Lyles received a special recognition for volunteering over 500 hours in 2009. He was presented a President's Volunteer Service Award with a letter and certificate from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, a letter from President Barak Obama, and a gold pin for volunteering over 500 hours.
