Altus Air Force Base Boy Scout Troop 212 kicks off their 2012-13 Scouting year with canoeing, boating and cycling.
In August, Scouts took on Lake Altus in canoes and motorboats during a two night camping trip. The Scouts learned water safety tips and the techniques of maneuvering the watercraft and spent a couple of hours swimming at the lake. Cycling was selected as the theme for September. Scouts spent a few hours with a experienced cyclists learning the rules of the road before beginning their rides.
In the first week, most had completed 75 miles of the 150 miles required to complete the Cycling Merit Badge. Scouts took advantage of a two night camping trip at Camp George Thomas just north of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge to conduct three rides, including a 25 mile ride back to Altus which culminated the weekend.
In October, Troop 212 is challenging itself to rock climbing and rappelling. An experienced climbing instructor will lead the Scouts through their training and supervise climbing during a weekend campout at Quartz Mountain. Later this year, the Troop will participate in Railroading, Welding, Automotive Maintenance, Veterinary Medicine and many other activities.
Troop 212 has resided at Altus AFB for over 30 years and currently consists of 11 Scouts ranging in age from 11 to 17. Two are Eagle Scouts. The Troop typically conducts a monthly campout and weekly meeting all of which are planned and run by the Scouts themselves. Troop 212 is also active in the community performing community service at areas like the Lake Altus swimming area and through programs such as Harvest for the Hungry.
The Scoutmaster, Mr. Charles Miller, and the Assistant Scoutmaster, Lt Col Rich Weaver, create an atmosphere where Scouts can learn new skills and develop abilities while forming their own plans and activities. The result is a 100% growth in membership over the past 12 months.
Troop 212 meets at the Base Scout House on Cedar Street, conveniently located in base housing. If you are interested in Scouting with Troop 212 please contact the Mr. Charles Miller at 580-471-1419 or Lt Col Rich Weaver at 580-481-4411.
