On Sunday, Oct. 28 the Frederick OK Arts Council will celebrate the 83^rd birthday of the Historical Ramona Theatre with a showing of the movie “Gold Diggers of Broadway”. The movie will begin at 2 p.m., and admission is by donation. Cookies and punch will be served immediately following the show. All proceeds will go to the construction of a handicap ramp—after all Ramona is now 83.

Named after Ramona Beard, daughter of banker J.B.Beard who financed construction of the Ramona, the theatre opened in October 1929 to the talking, dancing, singing picture of –you-guessed-it—“Gold Diggers of Broadway”. Admission on opening night was 50 cents for adults and 20 cents for children.

Owned and operated by the Frederick Arts and Humanities Council the theatre continues to host numerous community events. Many area residents have fond memories of attending pageants, movies and talent shows. During the depression folks came to Bank Night hoping to win money in a drawing after the show, couples remember “their” seats where a first kiss was received, some remember the first time parents allowed them to attend a late-night preview and some remember the last movie seen when the Ramona was a full-time movie house.
