A private contractor for Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), is preparing our two local highways for new striping. They’re placing little tabs on Broadway (Hwy. 62) and Main Street (Hwy. 283), to mark the lanes when the old lane striping material is removed.
According to Altus Street Commissioner Holmes Willis, the markers are reflectors to delineate the lanes, even at night. Willis explained that the old striping, which isn’t actually paint, is thermoplastic striping. The striping is made of pigments, binders and glass beads melded together to about 400 degrees to form a reflective and long-lasting highway marking material. The old material is being ground off with special equipment by the contractor’s employees. “The dust doesn’t really hurt anything,” Willis said, “but we sweep it up as best we can.” After all the old striping is ground and swept off to provide adhesion, the new stripes will be laid down.
