The Altus Junior High 7th grade girls closed out this past week by crushing the Elgin Lady Owls 30-12 on Thursday. This was a great bounce back after the Lady Dawgs lost a tough 25-24 game to Elk City on Monday.

Altus left little doubt about who was ready to play in the Elgin game as they sprinted out to an 11-0 first quarter lead. The Lady Dawgs continued to pull away in the second frame by outscoring Elgin 8-4 to take an 19-4 lead in to the half. Kelsee Baker had the hot hand for the Lady Dawgs accounting for 11 of the Lady Dawgs first half points. The second half started just like the first half as the Lady Dawgs outscored the Lady Owls 11-4 to build a 30-8 lead heading into the final frame. Elgin did outscore Altus 4-0 in the fourth quarter to make the final score 30-12. Baker led Altus with 16 points while Kady Worth added 8 points.

The Elk City contest was a back and forth battle. Altus broke out to a 7-6 first quarter lead but the Elkettes came back to outscore the Lady Dawgs 7-5 in the second quarter. Altus trailed 13-12 at the half.

The third quarter was just as exciting as the other two quarters as Elk City and Altus wouldn’t let each other pull away. Elk City outscored Altus 9-8 as the Lady Dawgs went into the final quarter trailing 22-20.

The last quarter was a nail-biter as the teams went up and down the court. Altus did manage to outscore Elk City 4-3 but that just wasn’t enough as the Elkettes escaped with a 25-24 victory. Angela Edwards led Altus with 8 points while Baker and Worth added six points apiece.

Altus (3-4) will open the week Monday as they travel to Duncan and will then host Lawton Ike on Tuesday.
