commercial architecture, but the non-profit organization has also become a powerful economic development tool as well. Main Street’s mission is to improve the quality of life in Altus be strengthening the downtown center of the community through concentrated efforts in organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring. The idea is that the Main Street District is the center of the community. Having a strong center will create a trickle outward to strengthen the entire community. Main Street’s approach to this plan is a four point system: Design, Organization, Promotion and Economic Restructuring. In order for this approach to be successful, all four points must be utilized equally.

Each point has a committee with a different goal. The Design Committee focuses on making the downtown aesthetically pleasing through building restoration and other enhancement projects. The Organization Committee’s goals are promoting the program itself, recruiting volunteers and raising funds. The Promotion’s Committee presents events and festivals to bring people downtown and draw in visitors from other areas. The Economic Restructuring Committee is dedicated to aiding existing businesses through information and incentives that can help expand sales, knowledge and ability.
