Jackson County youth win awards at Oklahoma State Fair

Renee Howard from Headrick, in Jackson County, recently placed first in the White Bread Category of the Senior Division at the State “Best of Wheat” Bread Baking contest held on Sept. 24 at the Oklahoma State Fair. Her entry of White Bread topped the other entries in the class and also won her the title of Grand Champion for the Senior Division.

State Senator Brent Howard receives Bulldog Award

Oklahoma’s District Attorney Association (ODAA) recently recognized Senator Brent Howard’s exemplary support for public safety by bestowing upon him their “Bulldog Award.” “Senator Howard has gone above and beyond in fighting to help victims, particularly children, receive the justice they deserve,” stated Chris Boring, President of ODAA and an elected DA from northwestern Oklahoma. “As a state, we must stop the victimization of children and Senator Howard’s actions are a positive step in that direction,” said local DA David Thomas.

Museum of the Western Prairie to host book review on “Path Lit by Lightning: The Life of Jim Thorpe”

On Tuesday, October 3, at 7 p.m., Justin Lenhart, curator at the Jim Thorpe Museum and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, will review “Path Lit by Lightning: The Life of Jim Thorpe.” The biography, released in 2022 and written by author David Maraniss, explores the colossal athletic skills of Oklahoma’s Jim Thorpe (Sac and Fox), who won gold medals in the decathlon and the pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. In this biography, the narrative of Thorpe’s successes follows the personal struggles he faced in his life.

Cameron University’s Justice for All series to examine organized crime and the marijuana industry

The Cameron University Department of Social Sciences will present “Justice for All: Examining the Nexus of Organized Crime and the Marijuana Industry in Oklahoma,” a presentation by Mark Woodward, Public Information/Education Office and Legislative Liaison for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN). The presentation, set for Tuesday, October 10, at 2:30 p.m. in McCasland Ballroom of the McMahon Centennial Complex, is open to the public.

Discover pathways to teacher certification during CU Become a Teacher virtual workshop

Individuals from all walks of life who want to enter the teaching profession are encouraged to attend “CU Become a Teacher,” a virtual workshop that will present the multiple pathways to becoming a certified teacher. The Zoom presentation will take place on Tuesday, October 3, at 5 p.m. and will offer information to those who have a college degree, those who have earned college credit but have yet to earn a degree, and those who have yet to earn college credit.
