Altus High School’s Head Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Coach Robert Garrison was named the 2023 State Track and Field Coach of the Year at the Oklahoma Coaches Association Summer Clinic, held July 24-29, in Tulsa.

Two Jackson County 4-H members were recognized for their achievements at the 102nd State 4-H Roundup that took place recently at Oklahoma State University. They all received their awards during the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma Honor Night Assembly where club members from across the state were awarded more than$146,000 in educational scholarships.

The Great Plains Stampede Rodeo was held Aug. 24-26, 2023. The annual three-night PRCA event was well attended each night. Miss Rodeo Oklahoma and Miss Rodeo Teen Oklahoma were both in attendance as well as other Rodeo Royalty from area rodeos.

It’s probably not on your calendar, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And that means it’s a good time to become more aware of the benefits of having life insurance — and the dangers of not having it.

O ut here on the farm we often look for ways to make life easier or simpler. One of those things is to find a good herd leader for a bunch of wheat pasture calves. I once had a Holstein cross steer that would lead a bunch of crazy wheat pasture calves anywhere you wanted them to go. What made him a good leader? Well, he understood where to go and they followed him. I never said I was an expert, but I’d say they just naturally looked up to him. Maybe it was because he weighed about 1,800 lbs.
